Choosing a domain name for your business website is a bit like naming a child. You want to find something that's meaningful, memorable, and not at all embarrassing when you have to say it out loud. (apple.com - awesome. wayne-kerr.com - not so awesome).
Your domain is often the first introduction people have to your brand, so you want to make a good first impression. But with millions of domains already registered, finding an available one that perfectly sums up your business can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack the size of Texas.
Never fear - I'm here to share some tips on how to wrangle that perfect domain name, no wrangling of actual haystacks required.
Keep It Simple, Silly
The best domain names are short, easy to spell, and roll off the tongue without tying it into knots. Avoid anything too long, complicated with hyphens/numbers, or made-up words only a mother could spell. You want it to be something customers can type correctly on the first try.
Make It Memorable
A great domain name should be sticky and memorable, like a duct-taped piece of fuzz on your favourite sweater. Using creative real words (Slack, Uber), fun spellings (Scribd, Flickr), or short punchy phrases (LoveBook, SoapHope) can make yours stand out.
Keep It Relevant
Ideally your domain name should give customers a hint about what your business does or the types of products you sell. That said, avoid anything too narrow or specific that could box you in if you expand your offerings down the road.
Consider Keywords (But Don't Overdo It)
Having one or two relevant keywords in your domain can be great for SEO. But avoid cramming in too many awkward keyword combos that make your domain indecipherable. You want to optimize, not be-bop-a-lipped.
Make It Extensible
While .com remains the most credible and recognizable domain extension, options like .net, .co, and even new extensions like .shop or .club can work well if the .com version isn't available. Just avoid anything too confusing or shady-looking.
Do A Thorough Background Check
Before pulling the trigger, do some research to make sure your brilliant domain name idea doesn't already belong to another business, mean something rude in another language, or - perhaps worst of all - lend itself to an embarrassing pun you'll never live down.
At the end of the day, your domain name is a crucial part of your brand identity. So whether you go with something creative and catchy or straightforward and self-explanatory, make sure it's one you're proud to put on your virtual welcome mat. And if you're still struggling, just remember - even Google started as a silly misspelled word!
